At what age are children potty trained on average?

When we look at the average age that children are potty trained, we are interested in the average age they start training and the average age when they have succeeded.

Average age of starting potty training = 2 years old
Average age of being potty trained = 2 years and 8 months old

 

 

Who are often potty trained first, girls or boys?

In general girls often succeed at potty training a little bit sooner than boys, about 1 or 2 months sooner.

Are children nowadays potty trained at an older age?

Yes they are, 50 years ago children were potty trained at a younger age. This change is mainly due to that parents nowadays use disposable diapers. This makes it less troublesome for parents when their child is not yet potty trained. It also causes parents to potty train their children less often. All resulting in children becoming potty trained at an older age.  

How can you ensure that your child is potty trained at a younger age?

If you want your child to be potty trained at a younger age, there are a few things you can do:

- Make sure the potty is always within reach
- Don’t get mad if the child doesn’t want to sit on the potty
- Show your child that you also use the toilet when you need to pee
- Reward your child with for instance a sticker when he/she uses the potty
- Keep practicing!
