What is the average age when children can ride a bike?
Already at the age of 3, most children can ride a bike with stabilizers very well. Once they’re around 5 years old they learn how to cycle without stabilizers.
How quickly does a child learn how to bike?
When a child really enjoys biking and is comfortable doing so, they can learn how to bike within 5 minutes. However, children who are afraid of biking could take much longer to get the hang of it. It’s therefore important that parents often practice with their children.
Choosing the right size of the bike
The size of the bike is not so much dependant on age, as it is on the height of the child. The size of the bike is often explained in terms of the associated tire size (in inches). These are relatively parallel with the child’s clothing size, which you can see in the table below.
Age | Height of child | Bike size |
2 - 4 years | 36 - 39 inch | 12 inch |
3 - 5 years | 39 - 41 inch | 14 inch |
4 - 6 years | 41 - 43 inch | 16 inch |
5 - 7 years | 43 - 46 inch | 18 inch |
6 - 8 years | 46 - 48 inch | 20 inch |
7 - 9 years | 48 - 50 inch | 22 inch |
8 - 12 years | 50 - 55 inch | 24 inch |
10 - 14 years | 55 - 60 inch | 26 inch |
