Is the divorce rate increasing?

The number of divorces increases each year. However the rate has seemed to increase less sharply in the last few years. This is partially due to the economic crisis. Getting a divorce is expensive, so people seem to postpone it. On the other hand, the number of marriages in the UK is decreasing. More and more people decide not to get married. This of course automatically means that these relationships won’t end in a divorce.

What is the divorce rate in other countries?

The number of divorces in the Western world is far larger than in other parts of the world. This is mainly due to the growing emancipation in the Western world. In America almost half of all marriages end in divorce. With respect to Europe, the UK and Finland have the highest divorce rates. Luxemburg has the lowest average divorce rate. The average divorce rate in Europe is 1.8 divorces per 1.000 people, which is much lower than the average UK divorce rate.
